Better - Part 3

Sermon: Better – Part 3

Theme: God wants us to grow, improve, and live better in Him.

Scripture References:

  • Philippians 3:13-14 – Press on toward the goal.

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 – New creation in Christ.

  • James 1:4 – Perseverance leads to maturity.

Introduction / Hook

Imagine a gardener planting a seed. Day after day, the seed is watered, nurtured, and cared for. At first, nothing seems to happen. Then, slowly, life begins to sprout. Just like that seed, God wants to plant growth, change, and betterment in your life.

Today, we’re talking about what it means to be better—not just in the world’s eyes, but in God’s eyes. Being better means leaving the past behind, embracing the new creation in Christ, and persevering through trials.

1. Forget the Past – Philippians 3:13-14

“Forget what is behind and strain toward what is ahead.”

  • Illustration: Think of a backpacker climbing a mountain. If they keep stuffing their backpack with rocks from past mistakes, they’ll never reach the top. Let go of the weight holding you down.

  • Application: God wants you to leave behind guilt, regret, and failures. Press forward, and focus on His plan for your future.

2. Embrace the New Creation – 2 Corinthians 5:17

“If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

  • Story: I once knew someone trapped in old habits, feeling like change was impossible. When they turned to God and allowed Him to work in their life, their old self began to fade, and a new, joyful, purpose-driven life emerged.

  • Application: You are not defined by your past. God offers a fresh start, a chance to become the person He designed you to be.

3. Persevere Through Trials – James 1:4

“Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete.”

  • Illustration: Diamonds are created under intense pressure. So are we. Every challenge is a chance for God to refine us and make us stronger.

  • Application: Don’t give up when life gets tough. Trust that God is using every trial to shape you into someone better.

Practical Steps to Be Better

  1. Pray daily – Seek God’s guidance and strength.

  2. Read Scripture – Let His Word teach and transform you.

  3. Serve others – Show God’s love through action.

  4. Choose uplifting company – Surround yourself with encouragers.

  5. Reflect on growth – Celebrate the victories God is giving you.

Conclusion / Powerful Closing

Being better is not a one-time decision—it’s a journey. Every day is an opportunity to leave the past behind, embrace the new life in Christ, and grow stronger through trials.

Call to Action:
Ask yourself: What one step can I take today to be better for God? Take that step, trust Him, and watch how He transforms your life.

Closing Prayer:
“Lord, we thank You for Your grace and mercy. Help us to forget the past, embrace the new creation You have made us to be, and persevere through every trial. Make us better today than we were yesterday, and guide our steps in Your ways. Amen.”
